Science Explorers
At Whitman, Science Explorers helps make science cool and exciting through our interactive, hands-on format. Ever dissect a shark? What about a squid? Have you ever mixed together two liquids to create a solid? Made glowing slime? Examined a real heart? Built and launched your own rocket? Lifted a person using nothing but air? These are just a few of the things our scholars get to experience here at Walt Whitman. Science Explorers was founded in 1999 by Jennifer Moorehead with a mission to make science fun. Whitman has been able to enjoy this amazing experience through a generous grant from Ametek!
Science Explorers is an innovative, hands-on science company dedicated to providing an opportunity for children ages 4-11 to become engaged in the wonders of science.
Teaching Garden
Through the generous grant from the American Heart Association, Walt Whitman is is taking a new approach in the fight against childhood obesity. We’ve teamed with noted child-nutrition activist and philanthropist Kelly Meyer to create the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens planted in elementary schools across the country that become real-life learning laboratories for students to learn what it means to be healthy.
Aimed at first graders through fifth, we teach children how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits.
Garden-themed lessons teach nutrition, math, science and other subjects all while having fun in the fresh air and working with your hands.
