In partnership with parents and the community, and with the belief that all children are capable of success, we, at Walt Whitman Elementary School commit to: Providing a quality learning experience for every student, every day, without exception.
Science Explorers is an innovative, hands-on science company dedicated to providing an opportunity for children ages 4-11 to become engaged in the wonders of science. At Whitman, Science Explorers engages students through an interactive, hands-on format. Students have the opportunity to conduct experiments like dissecting sharks, creating slime, examining a human heart, and launching a rocket. Whitman has been able to enjoy this amazing experience through a generous grant from Ametek.
Social Emotional Approach to Learning
Whitman Elementary is one of five recipients of the Wallace Foundation's Social/Emotional Learning Grant, aimed at supporting the development of children's cognitive, interpersonal, and character-building skills through an improved curriculum. Creating high-quality learning experiences means educating the whole child by meeting his or her social, emotional, and academic needs. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions.
With strong social and emotional skills, our students will be able to set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Whitman Elementary is a recipient of the 21st Century After School Grant, which gives our school the opportunity to offer a wide array of extracurricular enrichments during non-school hours. We provide dinner for participating students and then host numerous clubs such as Cooking Club, Sports Club, Debate Club, and Pom. In addition, the program helps our students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math, through creative approaches to learning. We also offer literacy training to the families of our students.
